A 75-Year Legacy Deserves Better Than a Generic Watch
How our brand extension design agency honours a legend
Lotus is a name forged in motorsport and innovation. For a licensed product to carry that name, it must be worthy. As a specialist brand extension design agency, our job isn’t to create merchandise; it’s to create authentic, covetable artifacts that feel like they were born from the brand’s own soul. This case study details our end-to-end design for a licensed watch collection, a masterclass in fighting the villain of the ‘lazy badge-slap’.
The Challenge: A Rich History That's Easy to Betray
The enemy wasn't the competition; it was the temptation of the cynical cash-in
When you’re designing for a brand with a legacy like Lotus, the real problem isn’t your rival on the next shelf; it’s the internal temptation to take the easy route. The generic product with a logo slapped on it. This approach doesn’t just create a forgettable product; it actively devalues the very heritage you’re trying to celebrate. The challenge was to create a watch that was a true horological tribute to Lotus’s history of innovation, not just a souvenir.
The Fix: A Strategy Built on Heritage & Innovation
We had a two-pronged plan of attack
The best work from a brand extension design agency has to win two specific battles:
Don't Just Brand It; Embody It
Build a Universe, Not a One-Off
We had to design the entire ownership experience, from the iconic packaging to the accompanying materials, to create a rich, story-driven product that felt like a piece of the Lotus legend.
The Results: A Masterclass in Authentic Brand Extension
This is what happens when you respect the source material

Deep Dive 1: The Core Product Design
Waging war on the problem of the 'logo-slapped afterthought'
The lazy approach is a standard, off-the-shelf watch case. Our strategic approach was to design a custom “chassis” constructed from multiple parts, with a focus on creating a lightweight form by removing unnecessary material, directly mirroring Lotus’s car design philosophy. The dials were inspired by classic racing instruments, featuring details like tachymeter scales. This is the key to a successful licensed product. It gains instant credibility and becomes a genuine piece of the Lotus world, not just a generic item.

Deep Dive 2: The Flawless Ownership Experience
Defeating the problem of a 'disappointing unboxing'
The project went beyond the watch itself to create a rich experience. The lazy approach is a standard watch box. Our solution was a unique packaging experience and a complete owner’s package, including an owner’s manual with design sketches and technical blueprints of the watch components. This is what a true brand extension design agency delivers. It transforms a simple purchase into a memorable event, adds immense perceived value, and turns a customer into a genuine fan.
